Hosta ‘Tokudama Aureonebulosa’

The Tokudama Aureonebulosa hosta has chartreuse leaves and wide, blue-green margins. In sunnier areas, the chartreuse becomes more golden. The thick leaves are cupped and very corrugated.

The Hostas in My Gardens

I love hostas!! Of all the plants I grow, hostas are definitely my favorite because they take so little care and yet they always look so spectacular all season long. (You really can’t say that about most other plants.) I now have hundreds of hostas in my gardens.

Hosta ‘Christmas Tree’

Hosta ‘Christmas Tree’ has broad, rounded, dark green leaves that are somewhat corrugated. The leaves have a narrow margin that starts out yellow in the spring and quickly changes to cream. Sometimes the center of the leaves will also have a streak of the margin color.

Hosta ‘Ground Master’

Hosta ‘Ground Master’ has medium to dark green leaves that have wide yellow margins in spring and white margins in summer. The margins are wavy, and the leaves are long and narrow, with a slightly shiny underside.

Hosta ‘So Sweet’

Hosta ‘So Sweet’ was chosen as the very first Hosta of the Year in 1996. This hosta has medium to dark green leaves and wavy, creamy margins. The leaves are smooth, of medium thickness, and shiny, becoming broader as the hosta matures.

Hosta ‘Queen Josephine’

Hosta ‘Queen Josephine’ was a surprise gift from one of my sons about two years ago. He often searches for hostas I have mentioned, and Queen Josephine was one of the hostas I had been unable to find anywhere locally.

Hosta ‘Golden Tiara’

Hosta ‘Golden Tiara’ is a classic because it was the first small hosta to have gold margined leaves. Golden Tiara grows very quickly and produces lots of flowers… and in my gardens, lots of seed pods, but the seeds do not germinate easily.

Hosta ‘Honeybells’

Hosta ‘Honeybells’ has light to medium green, slightly shiny leaves that are broader in mature plants. The leaves have wavy edges, which give them a somewhat puckery appearance. This hosta blossoms later than most others, but the very fragrant flowers are worth the wait.

Hosta ‘Regal Splendor’

Hosta ‘Regal Splendor’ is another one of my favorite hostas. This one is especially beautiful with its large, vase-shaped mound of foliage, soft blue leaves with wavy, pale yellow margins, and lavender flowers that tower over the plant on tall scapes.

Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’

Hosta ‘Sum and Substance’ was chosen as Hosta of the Year in 2004. It is impressive because of its huge size, but I think it starts out as one of the least attractive hostas in early spring because its rounded chartreuse leaves stay crumpled for such a long time.
