Molasses Crinkles — A Snickerdoodle-Like Molasses Cookie
Reader question… “My mother used to make what we called snickerdoodles, but all the recipes I can find for snickerdoodles seem more like a sugar cookie to me. The cookies I remember were made like snickerdoodles but they were a molasses cookie. I wonder if you know this recipe.” –Ellie
Try this recipe for molasses crinkles. The dough is rolled into balls and dipped in sugar like snickerdoodles, and this cookie has a really wonderful molasses flavor with a nice blend of spices. I was going to add that this is one of my husband’s favorite cookies… but then aren’t they all?
Ingredients
3/4 cup soft shortening (I use butter)
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 1/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
Cream the shortening and sugar. Add the egg and molasses and beat thoroughly until the mixture is light and “fluffy.” Mix the dry ingredients together with a whisk and add to the shortening and sugar mixture. Blend well but don’t over-mix. Chill the dough until it is firm.
Roll the dough into balls the size of large walnuts and dip the top of each ball in sugar. Place the balls, sugar side up, on a greased baking sheet. The cookies will expand as they bake, so space them about three inches apart. Sprinkle the top of each cookie ball with two or three drops of water and bake in a preheated 375°F oven for ten to twelve minutes. This recipe makes approximately four dozen cookies.

I had intended to include a picture… but then company arrived and somehow the entire batch of cookies mysteriously disappeared in an astonishingly short amount of time! Next time, perhaps…

Isn’t the diff between snickerdoodles and sugar cookies cream of tartar?
Comment by Shirley:
Sheryl, I have no idea. To me a snickerdoodle has the cracked top. I have read that it is cinnamon that makes the difference, and sometimes that it is cream of tartar, but the molasses crinkles recipe doesn’t have any cream of tartar and I think the finished cookies are very snickerdoodle-like. I don’t really associate sugar cookies with snickerdoodles… to me they are quite different.
