Mushrooms

Mushrooms

The combination of almost-daily rainfall and a new mulching of wood chips created a massive crop of mushrooms around and underneath our hostas. The mushrooms had to be removed because there were so many they were starting to crowd out the plants, so we started pulling them up and putting them in a bucket. One bucket-full led to two, and we obviously still needed more room, so we started dumping them in a wheelbarrow. So many mushrooms all together were quite a sight! This photograph is the result of that one day’s clear-out. I have no idea if the mushrooms were edible or not. They looked and smelled very much like the ones I buy in the stores, but also growing with them were some bright yellow mushrooms that even looked poisonous, so it seemed like too much of a risk to do anything except throw the whole bunch away. I didn’t want to, though….

That’s a lot of elves lost their homes. I love mushrooms.

Comment by Kathy:

Holy Moly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many mushrooms. We’ve had no rain this year (less than 2 inches) but even on a normal year, we only get two or three. I love them. They really bring out the child’s imagination.

Comment by Shirley:

I don’t know if those were good guys or bad guys. Some of them sure smelled and looked like good guys, but without knowing for sure, we wouldn’t dare to risk eating them. The wheelbarrow full was just the first day’s haul. For several days afterwards, we kept pulling mushrooms out from underneath the hostas before we finally got them all gone. Thanks everyone for the comments!
