Pretty in Pink… and Yellow, and White, and Blue

We’re still busy raking and trying to clean up the gardens, and the primroses are especially pretty right now. As more and more blossoms open every day, I can see I have some serious plant dividing to do. I have several very large primroses that I started from the seed I collected from my other primroses, and it is interesting to see the differences in shades of color. The seedling plants often are a combination of the colors of the plants growing near the parent plants, and I have noticed flowers with solid colors and flowers with different colored borders all on the same plant. This is why I enjoy starting my own plants from seed… I never quite know what the new plants will look like.

The pulmonaria didn’t seem to mind being moved last summer, but I wondered if all the plants we moved would make it through the winter cold. I was happy to find that the plants appear to be thriving… and blossoming. I found the first pink and blue pulmonaria flowers several weeks ago, peeking through the last light snowfall. The flowers are beautiful, but I think the dark green spotted leaves are beautiful too. Right now the leaves are still small but are starting to grow. Soon they will make a striking display that will last all summer long.

And finally… bloodroot. My clumps of bloodroot, all started from one clump my mother gave me from her garden many years ago, continue to grow and spread. We’ve had some cloudy days and some rainy days, so the bloodroot flowers haven’t stayed open very much, but today is bright and sunny and the flowers have all opened wide. The leaves are still curled though.

What beautiful flowers and pictures. Isn’t spring just full of life and surprises? I had no idea certain bulbs were planted in the front garden area by the previous owner until they began growing out!

Nice! These *are* beautiful! I love primroses. I wish they would grow here. I had never seen the bloodroot before but that is beautiful too.
