Wonderful to read your memories. The way I keep my bees is more old fashioned and your post reminded me of it, even though the only thing in common is the amount of effort humans will put forth for something sweet!

If I was fortunate enough to have maple trees, I think I'd put in the effort for the old-fashioned way. I just make enough of everything for family, not retail sales, and the effort put into making the syrup would make it taste just that much better, I have no doubt.

All is not lost...crazy people like us buy up those old used buckets and tap the trees in our suburban yard. We've got around 20 taps in and did our first boil of the year behind the garage last weekend. This is our 4th year and now we have our neighbors offering up their trees, and friends borrowing taps to do a few trees.

Reading this post make me remember reading Little House in The Big Woods as a child. I vividly remember reading Laura Ingalls talking about sugaring maple trees. :)

It's too bad that your neighbor has lost that special connection that comes from doing it manually, but thank you for sharing your memories. :)

I think all of those "intangible something"s are the things that people are talking about when they say that "something" is missing from their life, but can't figure out what "it" is. We have lost what it means to actually LIVE life, and have it be rewarding and satisfying in the process of living it. We lose so much when we allow that to happen.

Wow! I didn't know that it took so much sap to make the syrup. No wonder it is so expensive! I agree with the editor, you are a great writer. I love your blog.

I am from the maritimes in Canada and we are known for our sugar camps. This time every year we make the trip to the camps and eat it from the snow and on flapjacks. it is a great product and worth the money.

Your topic today makes me homesick.......I remember many, many, many years ago waiting for sugar season. It not only was a sign of spring it also meant we could have a sugar on snow party, providing there was a late snowfall. Also reminds me of the year my little brother decided to make maple syrup in the house........the kitchen wallpaper all came loose from all the steam! Thanks for sharing.
